Alfred Hawkinson and Anna Hallberg

During the reception after Joe Brown's wedding in early August,  there was considerable interest and discussion about Hallberg family history. It inspired me to investigate families mentioned in the Hallberg Reunion Minutes. Below is a summary of my research about the Hawkinson family. I sent it to Margaretha Olofsson asking for assistance. Tack så mycket, Margaretha, for the research following mine.

In 1931 and 1934, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Hawkinson, Louise, and Ralph attended the Hallberg Reunion.

Census records identified Louise as their daughter and Ralph as Alfred's brother. They also listed Anna as Mrs. Hawkinson's  given name and state she was born in Sweden about 1884. The records also listed Christine Carlson as her mother.

Illinois County Marriage records state Anna S. Hallberg married Alfred Hawkinson in 1908 in Galesburg. She was 25. Her parents are listed as C. B. Hallberg and Louise Peterson.

Gothenburg Passenger Lists has Christine Hallberg and Anna leaving 10 October 1884.  Frödinge is listed their birthplace.Christine is thirty-one and Anna is eleven months. Ellis Island records indicate Ann and her mother Christine Hallberg arrived 27 October 1884.

The 1900 Census lists Christine as married to August Carlson in 1896. In 1910, the census shows her living  with the Hawkinsons and her marital status widowed.

Christine Louise Carlson died in 1921. The Illinois death record states her birth as Sweden 27 Jun 1853 and her father J. Peterson.

Arkiv Digital might have answers to my questions:

Who is C. B. Hallberg? Could it be Carl August Pettersson born 02 JUL 1856 in Frödinge to Peter Hallberg (1820-1872)?

Christine emigrated with her infant daughter. She was 31. What happened to her husband? Was she born in Frödinge?

Hej Bob!

This is what I found out about Christina Lovisa Petersson born 28 juni 1853 in Sweden under Östra Grinderum, Frödinge [Frödinge CI:4 (1843-1864) Bild 52 / sid 95]  and the daughter Anna Sofia Wilhelmina born 7 mars 1883 in Sveden under Östra Grinderum, Frödinge [Frödinge CI: 8 (1883-1895) Bild 7 / sid 5].

Christina Lovisa first married 24 april 1877 in Frödinge [Frödinge CI:7 (1874-1882) Bild 96 / sid 169] to Carl August Pettersson born 26 augusti 1851 in Lidhem under Höghult, Frödinge [Frödinge CI:4 (1843-1864) Bild 40 / sid 71] Carl August is son of Smed Peter Petersson (Hallberg) born 1820 and Carolina Jonsdotter born 1822. Carl August dead 25 december 1879 in Sveden under Östra Grinderum. They have no children.

Christina Lovisa remarries 29 september 1882 in Frödinge [Frödinge EI:1 (1879-1894) Bild 15] with Johan August Andersson born 9 juni 1858 in Skälshult under Borghult, Vimmerby, Kalmar County, Småland [Vimmerby stadsförsamling CI:7 (1846-1861) Bild 114 / sid 219] dead 14 januari 1942 in Hemgården, Nyköping Västra, Södermanlands County, Södermanland [Sveriges Dödbok 1901-2013] son of Widow Stina Charlotta Andersdotter.

In this marriage Christina Lovisa and Johan August have the daughter Anna Sofia Wilhelmina born 7 mars 1883 in Sveden under Östra Grinderum, Frödinge [Frödinge CI:8 (1883-1895) Bild 7 / sid 5]. They are first living in Sveden under Östra Grinderum, Frödinge, later to be found in the Obefintlighetsboken (book of no record) [Frödinge AI:20 (1886-1896) Bild 317 / sid 1058]. They have moved without no letter of moving by the priest. It's noted that the husband Johan August Andersson are living in Hallingeberg and that Christina Lovisa has emigrated to USA with her daughter Anna Sofia Vilhelmina.

Finds the husband Johan August Andersson in Nykoping with a note in "Husförhörsboken" that Johan August Andersson is divorced from Christina Lovisa Petersson 3 februari 1892 [Nyköpings Sankt Nicolai AIIa:11 (1912-1919) Bild 1200 / sid 460]

Christina Lovisa Petersson parents: Petter Nilsson born 1809 and Stina Lisa Brisell born 1817. The Priest has written Pehrsson instead of Petersson, but it is the right person.

Who is CB Hallberg? I belive that it might be her first husband Carl August Petersson born 1853. Maybe she have stated being a vidow of Hallberg and not that she is divorced from Johan August Andersson.

Or there has been some sort of a misunderstanding of there name at the daughter Anna Sofia Wilhelminas Wedding. Im sending pictures of the daughters birth and the death dates of the parents.

I also found out that Carl August Petessons Mother Carolina Jonsdotter born 1822, Sister Augusta Christina Petersdotter born 1865 and brother Anders Johan Petersson born 1859 moved from Frödinge to Åsen, Bellö in Jönköping County from where the migrated to USA. Augusta Christina migrated 25 mars 1879, Anders Johan migrated 31 december 1879 and Carolina migrated 24 mars 1881. I hope this info can help you, feel free to contact me if you need anything else about the family here in Sweden.

Hälsningar Margaretha.

Summarizing Margaretha's research my conclusions are as follows.

Anna's mother Christine married Carl August Petterson Hallberg in 1877. He died in 1879. They had no children. Christine later married Johan Andersson. They had a daughter Anna.

Christine divorced Andersson and immigrated to Galesburg when Anna was 11 months old. They used the Hallberg name.

Perhaps, Anna never knew about her father Johan Andersson. The C.B. Hallberg listed as her father on her marriage record is Carl August Hallberg.
